What’s the idea behind Birò?

Birò aims to be the alternative to a car in an increasingly crowded city and hopes to contribute to a sustainable and liveable city. Because of its compact dimensions, Birò occupies less space in the streets and keeps residents mobile, which leaves more room for public green spaces. Furthermore, Birò is 100% electric and emission- free, thereby contributing to a cleaner and quieter living environment.

Where does Birò come from?

Birò was created by Matteo Maestri. It was designed to contribute to a sustainable and liveable city. It’s an Italian product made by Estrima.
Who is Birò for? Birò is meant for anyone who wants to move around the busy city, or beyond, in a clean, flexible and quick way.

What Type of Driving Licence do I need to drive a Biro in the UK?

The Biro is classed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) as LE6, This type of vehicle (A Biro) has does have specific licence requirements in the UK. To drive such a vehicle in the UK, a driver must have the minimum of either a full B1 or B car licence, or a full motorcycle licence in any 4 categories (AM, A1, A2, A)

It is not possible for provisional licence holders of any category to drive a Biro. Therefore holding a provisional moped/motorcycle licence alone and completing a CBT would not give the correct entitlement. The rider would still only have a provisional licence and not a full moped (category AM licence). To obtain a full licence in any motorcycle category (AM, A1, A2 or A), riders must pass the following:

  • Motorcycle Theory and Hazard Perception Test
  • Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
  • Motorcycle Module 1 Test
  • Motorcycle Module 2 Test

Some licence holders can complete a CBT to validate their full moped entitlement. However, this only applies to people with a full car licence and people with a full car licence can already drive these vehicles.

Can I take CBT training in a Biro?

In terms of using a Biro to complete the CBT training: The DVSA would not allow this vehicle to be used on a CBT as it is not representative of type. By not representative of type, they mean it bears no resemblance to other vehicles in either the AM, A1, A2 or A categories. The difference in the type of control / balance required when “riding” a moped or motorcycle versus “driving” this particular vehicle is vast. Allowing this vehicle to be used to obtain a CBT and therefore gain provisional entitlement to categories AM / A1 would do nothing to improve road safety.
